Ayotunde Ayobello
Oil on canvas
In Internal Turmoil, Ayobello captures the silent intensity of the therapeutic encounter. A patient sits engulfed in flames, her body outwardly calm but inwardly consumed, while across from her a physician quietly takes notes. The flames, leaping yet contained, are not literal but psychological, embodying the hidden infernos of anxiety, depression, and trauma that rage within.
The stark contrast between the woman’s composed posture and the chaos surrounding her reflects the paradox of suffering: the ability to appear “fine” while burning inside. The physician, meanwhile, represents presence and witness, his task not to extinguish the fire directly, but to help contain it, name it, and guide the patient toward her own path of healing.
Ayobello renders this therapeutic moment as both intimate and universal. It speaks to the unseen battles many endure and to the role of psychiatry as a space where those inner flames can be acknowledged without shame.
