Ariela & Rooster. 2019.

Ayotunde Ayobello

Oil on canvas

In Ariela & Rooster, Ayobello captures a portrait of his then 5 year old daughter during a trip to a farm in New Jersey. Rooted in both tenderness and quiet strength, the young girl is depicted holding a rooster close to her chest, its plumage ablaze with vivid reds, golds, and blacks. Her gaze meets the viewer directly, wide-eyed and unflinching, embodying the raw openness of youth.

The rooster, long a symbol of vigilance, resilience, and awakening, becomes here an extension of the child herself: bold yet vulnerable, delicate yet powerful. Set against a lush garden backdrop, the scene evokes themes of nurture, responsibility, and the universal resilience of children.
